Homicipher: Prologue

Homicipher Prologue is a single player game set in a grey world populated by strange ominous men.

The player, a girl, has no idea how she got here, no phone or belongings and musty find some way out. Are these men friendly or are they monsters? The game plays like a point and click adventure. Items and characters that can be interacted with are highlighted by a white diamond shape and clicking on them may give a choice for example clicking on a door will give a choice to enter or leave a room; clicking on an object may give the option to pick it up; clicking on a person will probably trigger some sort of conversation.

Conversation is the more unusual feature of the game. The strange men will say something and their words appear at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on each of these words brings up a text box where the player can enter what they think is being said remembering that this is a conversation and what looks like a word could represent a short phrase. It is almost certain that mistakes will be made because clues are few and far between but by having more and more conversations the initial guesses can be corrected until things start to make sense.

The game has music and sound effects but no voice acting. It can be played in a window or in full screen mode and both a mouse and a keyboard are essential.

The main menu. For me the game opened in a window but clicking on the symbol in the lower left toggled it to full screen mode (Windows) from mobygames.com
Apart from the full screen/window toggle on the main menu these are the only controls (Windows) from mobygames.com
There is a choice of languages. English has been selected and the others are Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese and Japanese and I have no idea which is which. (Windows) from mobygames.com
The game starts with our character finding themselves in a strange place. Enjoy the colour because this place is predominantly grey. (Windows) from mobygames.com
We meet our first character. What do we think he's saying? "dinner's arrived", "Where'd you come from?", "Who/what are you?", "Got any cigarettes?" Could be anything (Windows) from mobygames.com
We eventually call this guy Mr Hood. The diamond shape means we can interact with him. The same shape is used for objects we can interact with too. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Mr Hood speaks. Clicking on the word he's spoken brings up a text box where we can make a guess at what he is saying. Through repeated interactions we can change/correct/refine our guesses to the point where things start making sense. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Occasionally the game gives us a helping hand (Windows) from mobygames.com
There are lots of save slots but they did not work for me, perhaps I was not far enough to the game else I was doing something wrong (Windows) from mobygames.com
Moving about in this grey world and we have three options, the one on the right is blocked but we can get through the one on the left (Windows) from mobygames.com
He seems pleased to see us. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Talk about stating the obvious! However we get some basic lessons soon (Windows) from mobygames.com
I think we have our first word! (Windows) from mobygames.com
