Robert D. Anderson & the Legacy of Cthulhu

Robert D. Anderson & the Legacy of Cthulhu is a fan made project based upon the Arkham Cycle Cthulhu stories by H.P. Lovecraft. More specifically, it is an adaptation of the pen & paper scenario Himmlers Schoggothe by Samuel Miller. The game is best described as a horror novel, using three means of storytelling: spoken word, filmed cut-scenes and playable content from a first-person perspective, built with the FPS Creator engine.

The player is cast as the hard-boiled private investigator Robert D. Anderson from New York. That is just a pseudonym however to hide his real name, Robert Dietrich. After an incident, he is forced to investigate his origins and travel to The Third Reich where the castle of his ancestors is occupied by SS troops and members of the Order of the Black Sun.

The game is divided into 15 chapters. In the playable sections players must explore the castle, talk to characters, solve puzzles and defeat enemies - combining shooter with adventure gameplay. Up to 20 weapons and spells can be collected, but it is encouraged to avoid confrontations.

Introduction live action video - the protagonist detective is chasing off some bad guys. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Game title. Almost all texts in the game is in German. (Windows) from mobygames.com
The intro video continues as artist drawings, describing the protagonists family history, and some horror images from the present (1940). (Windows) from mobygames.com
The protagonist ends up being caught by German soldiers outside his family castle, and thrown into a sort of dungeon. (Windows) from mobygames.com
After the long intro movie, you are presented with a book, containing the 15 chapters and extra contents of this story. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Each chapter has a page in the book, and they can be played in any order, though the story is presented in sequence. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Each chapter has a selection of starting a new game or loading an existing save. Menus upon menus here. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Each chapter takes a long time to load, whether saved or new, while a speaker voice gives an introduction, showing some related screen art. (Here is the dungeon) (Windows) from mobygames.com
Now we are finally in the game. This is the dungeon, or 'hole' as the soldiers called it. On the lower left is a rather large status display showing health and bullets for the current weapon. (Windows) from mobygames.com
We are not alone here, there is a captured British officer who suggests we can find a weapon in a corner. There is some ammo on the floor near him too. (Windows) from mobygames.com
In the corner is a skeleton, with a gun and some more ammunition. No flashlight unfortunately, I find the game a bit dark. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Getting out of the room, we soon meet the soldiers, and they are not pleased. When near objects like doors you get hints on what to do. (captured on widescreen monitor) (Windows) from mobygames.com
guards and soldiers drop weapons and ammo, move close to automatically pick it up. (Windows) from mobygames.com
No swastika symbols allowed, as is normal for German games. (Windows) from mobygames.com
A banana is a small health pickup, if you get hurt. The sub machine gun at the far desk is something the protagonist won't touch, only pistols and revolvers for him. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Some pretty art on the walls here, I'm not seeing cute-thulhu anywhere though. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Even when you find a required key, the game reminds you of it. The door will open normally if you have the key, using 'Enter' as with other doors. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Skipping on to chapter two:s book page. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Another loading screen for chapter two with a voiced recapture of events in chapter one. (no in-game subtitles available) (Windows) from mobygames.com
Almost the first we see in chapter two is a teasing view of a field gun, currently locked away. (Windows) from mobygames.com
In a nearby room we find some larger ammunition, field-gun sized perhaps? (Windows) from mobygames.com
This fellow took some shots at us, so he had to be put down. Another SMG that we can't use. (Windows) from mobygames.com
On top of some boxes, reachable from a short ladder, is a med pack. This is better than the banana health pack. (I'm looking down at it from the ladder - look Ma, no feet!) (Windows) from mobygames.com
There are also unfriendly scientists in lab coats in some rooms. They have to go away as well. (Windows) from mobygames.com
For some reason, even though the protagonist can jump, he is unable to climb or shift these boxes. However, there is a way through. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Another resting guard, and a healthy fruit. The keys will come in handy soon. There is also a revolver glowing on the table, which can be picked up. (Windows) from mobygames.com
The keys can open doors to rooms with bigger guns. (Windows) from mobygames.com
A rifle standing sunk into the floor..unusable, of course. Perhaps we need a modern King Arthur to pull it out? (Windows) from mobygames.com
The field gun is useful if we found the ammo for it; and it points at the boxes blocking the way that we saw before. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Past the boxes are some more dungeons, with some interesting exits to reach. (Windows) from mobygames.com
More scientists to subdue, they are better shots than you'd think. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Some areas are very dark, and lacking a flashlight it is good that important objects are often highlighted; this is an ammo pickup, and it also moves up & down to make it more noticeable. (Windows) from mobygames.com
An odd machine near the deceased scientist...and a skeleton too...should I? (Windows) from mobygames.com
Ooh, look at all the pretty lights! The machine opened a door where this purple thing was... (Windows) from mobygames.com
...and another armed scientist, who was faster than me. I'm dying here. Notice the number on the upper left, this is the protagonists remaining lives, now zero. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Game over - the protagonist detective is dead. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Bonus menu, with in game videos. (Windows) from mobygames.com
Multiplayer menu, with different maps. (Windows) from mobygames.com
